Thomas Thompson

Male, b. circa 1804, d. 1879
Thomas Thompson was born at Great Burstead, Essex, circa 1804. He became a labourer as a young man but on 15 November 1825 presented himself at Maidstone, Kent, where he voluntarily inlisted himself with the 40th Regiment of Foot for a bounty of four pounds. The following day his military service began as before a Justice of the Peace he swore allegiance to King George IV. He was described as being five feet five inches tall with fresh complexion, light blue eyes and light brown hair. He was 20 years of age.1 He had been lodging with Myra and her son John Charles Mead at Laindon, Essex, at least since 1851 when the census recorded him in her household as a blind 46 year-old Chelsea Pensioner.2 Thomas married Myra Rachel Mead, daughter of William Mead and Mary Ann Tyler, on 1 January 1855 at the District Church, Billericay, Essex.3,4

In 1861 the Thompson family lived at High Street, Billericay, Essex, and at the time of the census Myra's Aunt, Sarah Cave (Sally Mead), was staying with them as a visitor.5

In 1871 Ten years later Thomas and Myra were still living at High Street, Billericay, Essex, with their children but Myra's firstborn, John, had now left home.6

Thomas Thompson died in 1879 at Billericay, Essex.7
