Julia Cooksey

Female, b. 12 December 1887, d. 26 January 1959
Julia Cooksey, daughter of George Philip Cooksey, was born at 17 Totteridge Road, Battersea, London, on 12 December 1887, where her parents rented two unfurnished rooms on the second floor at four shillings and sixpence per week from a Mr Salt. Julia was not the eldest child but her older sister Selina appears to have been brought up by relations in Hampshire from a very early age and was probably no longer with the family.1

By 1891 the family had moved a few streets to 118 Lavender Road, Battersea, London, where they occupied three rooms. Two other families each had two rooms in the same building.2 The family had moved again by 1901, a few doors along to 128 Lavender Road, Battersea, London, where they were the sole occupants of the property.3

The family were still at 128 Lavender Road, Battersea, London, ten years later.4 As the 'eldest' child Julia had a great hand in helping to bring up her younger brothers and sisters. Her duties even ran to meeting her father as he left work on pay day, "otherwise his pay would disappear in the till of the pub on the way home". In later life she referred to him as a "cuss".5

In her early twenties Julia was courted by William Henry Joseph Wilcock but after his death in 1911, caused by kick to the head during a football match, she transferred her affections to his younger brother Albert.6

Julia Cooksey married Albert James Wilcock on 12 September 1914 at St Michael, Battersea, London.7 A son, Cecil, was born to Julia and Albert in 19158 but soon Albert was on War Service, serving as a Corporal with the Royal Army Service Corps (M.T.) in France and later Germany.9 By 1918 Julia lived at 78 Eccles Road, Battersea, London, where she was joined by Albert when he returned from Germany in 1919.10 Apparently his first words when he returned from army service and knocked at the front door were, "Don't come near me Julie, I'm running alive!" and a hot bath was his immediate priority.6

It was at 78 Eccles Road, Battersea, London, that twins Julia and Joyce were born on 7 December 1920.6,11,12,13

Albert returned to working for the London County Council Tramways, as he had done before the War, and he rose to the position of Inspector, serving at Clapham Depot14 but family life was shattered in 1923. Albert was badly beaten by drunks on a late night tram when he intervened to try to stop a brawl. As a result of his injuries he caught pneumonia and died, leaving Julia with three young children to look after on her own.15

At some time between 1926 and 1927 Julia moved to 78 Greyswood Street, Streatham, London,16 and the family were still there in 1935,17 but by 1937 they had moved to 326 Southcroft Road, Streatham, London.18 In later life Julia lived at 34 Park Hall Road, Norwood, London,19 Tudor Road, Lower Morden, Surrey,20 and her last home was above Kenton's furniture store at 61b Camberwell Road, Camberwell, London.21,20

Julia Cooksey died on 26 January 1959 at 54 Church Road, Worcester Park, Surrey, at age 71. She stayed with her daughter Julie during her last days.22,23

This is the first time that daughter Selina has been shown in the Cooksey family although she was not actually living with them as she is shown elsewhere in the census return as the wife of Augustus Knipe. Similarly, neither Frederick (serving as a soldier in the Far East) or Albert Edward (working in Salisbury) were living in the household. The line for Lillian has been crossed through.

JW relates: "Julia's elder sister Selina left home at an early age leaving Julia to help bring up the eight brothers and sisters that came after her, something that she was a little bitter about".
Selina was with her aunt Julia Windsor in Portsea, Portsmouth, in 1891, and then with her grandmother Selina Harris, also in Portsmouth, in 1901. Being away from her parents' home at the age of five and fifteen infers that she may not have been brought up by her parents at all.
