Philip Cooksey

Male, b. 19 February 1897, d. 1961
Philip Cooksey, son of George Philip Cooksey, was born at 128 Lavender Road, Battersea, London, on 19 February 18971,2 and was baptized on 9 March 1897 at St Mary, Battersea, London.1 He grew up in the house at Lavender Road and, indeed, apart from his time in the army, this Battersea street was to be Philip's home for his entire life.3

In 1911, aged 14, Philip was working as an errand boy4 but four years later, during the Great War and aged 18, he enlisted in the army and served in France as a Private with the 1st London Regiment and the Labour Corps. He received the three medals known affectionately as "Pip", "Squeak" and "Wilfred": the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Allied Victory Medal.5

Philip's father died in 19186 and his mother, Selina, in 1922.7 Very shortly afterwards Philip married Caroline Cameron8,9 and they both set up home in the house that Philip had grown up in at 128 Lavender Road, Battersea, London.10 The house saw a new generation of the Cooksey family when Philip and Carrie's daughter Joan was born in 192311 but, sadly, Joan died at the age of seven in 1930.12

Some time between 1929 and 1932 Philip and Carrie moved next door to 126 Lavender Road, Battersea, London,13,14 and they remained together there15 until Philip's death in 1961.16

This is the first time that daughter Selina has been shown in the Cooksey family although she was not actually living with them as she is shown elsewhere in the census return as the wife of Augustus Knipe. Similarly, neither Frederick (serving as a soldier in the Far East) or Albert Edward (working in Salisbury) were living in the household. The line for Lillian has been crossed through.
