Mary Mead

Mary Mead, daughter of George Mead and Mary Goodwin, was born circa 1705. Mary Mead was baptized on 24 August 1705 at St Mary Magdalene, Great Burstead, Essex.1,2,3
Mary was named as a beneficiary in the will of her father written on 23 September 1722. She and her heirs were bequeathed his farm of about 100 acres in Bomflet and Wifford, in the occupation of Robert Webb. If Mary had no issue then these lands would go to her brother George. She was also to receive £200 when she reached the age of 21.4
Mary and Matthew Dayles obtained a marriage licence on 18 November 1723. Matthew was described as a single man, yeoman of Rettendon, while Mary was of Billericay, aged 21, single woman. Bondsman was Thomas Josline of Chelmsford, innholder.5

There is a little abiguity about Mary's date of birth. The Great Burstead parish register shows her her baptism as taking place in 1705. Her father's will of 1722 indicates that she is not 21 at that time, and therefore born after 1701. Her marriaqe licence records her as 21 in 1723 and therefore born 1702 or earlier. She may have been baptised a few years after her birth or she may not really have been 21 when the marriage licence was applied for. - [S100] Will of George Mead of Great Burstead, grocer, Essex, 1726.
